How Ochre Began
Ochre started as a single mud-and-stone house on the Kaza road, restored rather than replaced, and grown slowly by people who live in the valley year-round.
About Ochre
The building that houses Ochre today started life as a family home in Shego, built the way most Spitian houses are — thick mud walls, poplar-beam ceilings, and a flat roof for drying apricots and storing winter fodder. Rather than tear it down, the family who owned it chose to restore and extend it as a small guesthouse.
That decision shaped everything that followed: Ochre grew room by room, always in the same materials and by the same local masons, rather than arriving as a finished hotel built off-site. It remains a family-run, Spiti-based operation.
