1,000-Year-Old Gompa
The largest and oldest monastery in Spiti Valley, its whitewashed walls stacked against the hillside like a fortress, visible for kilometres before you arrive.
On The Map
Founded in the 11th century and rebuilt several times after raids, earthquakes, and fire, Key Monastery today houses over a hundred monks of the Gelugpa order. Its maze of narrow stairways, prayer halls, and rooftop terraces is still very much a working monastery, not a museum.
Morning is the best time to visit — the low sun catches the whitewashed tiers, and the monks' prayer chants carry across the valley. The monastery also runs a small residential school for young monks, and visitors are welcome to sit quietly in the main prayer hall.
