Spiti has two very different seasons for visitors — the open summer months and the harder, quieter, snow-locked winter. Here's how to choose.
The high passes connecting Spiti to Manali (Kunzum) and further into Ladakh typically open from late May/June through September/October, making June to September the most accessible window, with July–August seeing the most visitors.
Late September and October bring golden barley terraces, thinner crowds, and cold but clear nights — many repeat guests consider this the best light of the year for photography.
Winter (November–March) closes most high-altitude side trips but opens a different kind of Spiti: frozen waterfalls, snow leopard tracking season in Pin Valley, and villages at their most traditional, insulated by deep snow. This is a niche but increasingly popular season for guests who want the valley without the crowds.
Quick Reference
