Among the World's Highest Villages
A tiny settlement of some thirty households at 4,587 metres, its monastery and school perched at the edge of habitable altitude, with silence that feels almost total.
On The Map
Komik is often described, with some competition from neighbouring villages, as one of the highest motorable villages in the world. Its small monastery, Tangyud Gompa, is fortress-like in construction, with thick mud walls built to survive the winter wind.
There isn't a great deal to 'do' in Komik beyond arriving, and that's rather the point — the thin air, the wide sky, and the complete absence of noise make it one of the more meditative stops on the plateau.
