Sub-divisional Headquarters
The largest town in Spiti and its beating heart — a market town of whitewashed houses ten minutes from Ochre, where the valley's roads, monks, and travellers all eventually meet.
On The Map
Kaza sits on the banks of the Spiti river and splits into Old and New Kaza, joined by a short walk past prayer wheels and apple orchards. It's the last real town before the high villages, and the place to arrange permits, change currency, and stock up before heading further into the valley.
The Thursday and Sunday markets bring traders down from the villages with dried peas, apricots, and pashmina wool, while the many small cafés around the main bazaar are good for a slow coffee between excursions.
Nearby
A short walking loop past chortens and the old town's mud-brick lanes.
Sunset views over the braided river channels and the ridge beyond.
Ochre's team can help you time your excursion, arrange a driver, and pack a lunch — just ask at the front desk or write ahead.
