The Cold Desert

Spiti Valley

A high-altitude desert of ochre cliffs, glacial rivers, and villages that have farmed the same barley terraces for centuries — Spiti is the reason Ochre exists.

At A Glance

Spiti Valley

Spiti — 'the middle land' — sits between Tibet and the rest of Himachal, a landscape of bare rock, thin air, and villages painted in whitewash and ochre. Rainfall is rare; the valley's colour comes instead from mineral-streaked cliffs and the deep blue of its rivers.

Staying at Ochre puts you on the main Kaza road, within reach of both the valley's better-known sights and its quieter corners — a working base rather than a single attraction to tick off.
