Former Capital, Cliffside Monastery
Once the capital of the Spiti kingdom, Dhankar's monastery clings to a knife-edge cliff above the confluence of the Spiti and Pin rivers — one of the valley's most dramatic sights.
On The Map
Dhankar means 'fort' in the local dialect, and the old monastery-fortress was indeed the seat of the Nono, Spiti's local rulers, for centuries. The current gompa, still active, is built directly into the eroding cliff face and holds a small but significant collection of thangkas and manuscripts.
From the monastery, a moderate hour-long hike climbs to Dhankar Lake, a still, high-altitude tarn ringed by barren peaks — a rewarding half-day trip on its own.
Nearby
A roughly 5 km round trip climb, best started early in the morning.
The turn-off to Pin Valley National Park is a short drive past Dhankar.
