Moon Lake
A crescent-shaped alpine lake at 4,300 metres, cradled by scree slopes and changing colour through the day — one of the most photographed high-altitude lakes in the Himalaya.
On The Map
Chandratal, the 'Moon Lake', takes its name from its crescent shape when seen from above. Accessible only from June to early October, it sits on the classic Spiti–Manali route and is often visited as a long day trip or an overnight camping stop.
Camping is only permitted a short distance from the lake itself to protect the shoreline, and the short, high-altitude walk in from the parking area is worth doing slowly. Nights here bring some of the clearest, darkest skies in the region.
