Fossil Village
A village of mud houses beneath a giant seated Buddha, on a hillside once the bed of the Tethys Sea — where children still sell fossilised ammonites found in the surrounding fields.
On The Map
Langza's giant golden Buddha statue sits above the village looking out over the Spiti river valley and the Chau Chau Kang Nilda peak beyond — one of the most photographed views in the region, especially at first and last light.
The surrounding slopes are rich with marine fossils, remnants of the Tethys Sea that once covered this land before the Himalayas rose. Local children often sell genuine ammonite fossils found nearby, a small and unusual souvenir of deep geological time.
