Before You Ask
The questions we hear most from guests planning a trip to Ochre and Spiti Valley.
Ochre sits on the main Kaza road in Shego village, about 2 km / 5 minutes from central Kaza, at an altitude of 3,650 metres. Full directions are on our How to Reach page.
Spiti is most accessible from June to early October, with September offering golden harvest light and fewer crowds. Winter (Nov–March) is a quieter, more niche season with snow leopard sightings possible in Pin Valley. See our Best Time to Visit guide for details.
Yes — Ochre operates through the winter for guests reaching us via the Shimla–Kinnaur route, which stays open longer than the Manali–Kunzum route. Do check with us ahead of a winter visit, as road conditions can change quickly.
Indian nationals need no permit for most of the valley; foreign nationals require a Protected Area Permit, arranged in Kaza. Our front desk can help with the paperwork on arrival.
Mobile coverage across Spiti is limited mostly to BSNL and can be unreliable even in Kaza. Ochre has WiFi in common areas, but we'd encourage treating this as a genuine break from constant connectivity.
Build in 1–2 acclimatisation days at Ochre before heading higher, drink more water than usual, and avoid alcohol on your first night. Mild headache is common; if symptoms worsen (persistent nausea, breathlessness at rest), tell our team immediately.
Every room rate includes breakfast, housekeeping, in-room heating, and access to the rooftop terrace and common lounge. Lunch and dinner can be pre-booked separately at the restaurant.
Yes — this is one of the things we do most. Tell us your dates, interests, and comfort with altitude, and our team will suggest a day-by-day plan before or after you arrive.
Yes, most dishes on our menu are vegetarian or easily adapted, and we can accommodate other dietary requirements with a little advance notice.
Yes — our Family / Premium Rooms are designed with extra space and bedding options for families, though we'd note that Spiti's altitude affects children as it does adults, so plan for acclimatisation time.
